Aizwal: Polling has officially begun for the assembly elections in the state of Mizoram. This crucial election will see voters cast their ballots for all 40 assembly sears in a single phase today, with polling commencing at 7 am and scheduled to conclude at 4 pm.

The election holds immense importance as more than 8.75 lakh electorates, including 4 lakh 30 thousand 26 women, will determine the fate of 174 candidates vying for these seats.

Key political leaders such as the ruling Mizo National Front, Indian National Congress, and the Zoram People’s Movement have fielded candidates for all 40 seats. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is contesting in 23 Assembly constituencies, and the Aam Aadmi Party is participating in four Assembly segments. Additionally, 27 Independent candidates are also in the electoral fray.

Out of the 1,276 voting centers in the state, 149 are designated as remote polling stations, ensuring that even the most geographically isolated areas have access to the voting process. Notably, around 30 polling stations located along the inter-state and international borders have been identified as critical and vulnerable, requiring heightened security measures.

Mizoram shares a 510 km border with Myanmar and a 318 km border with Bangladesh, making border security a paramount concern. To ensure a secure and peaceful election process, at least 3,000 policemen and 5,400 personnel from the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) have been deployed.

Madhup Vyas, the Chief Electoral Officer, encouraged voters to actively participate in the democratic process by coming out in large numbers to exercise their franchise.
