MPhil is no more a recognized degree, announces UGC
The University Grant Commission (UGC) has announced that the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is not a recognized university degree anymore.
New Delhi: The University Grant Commission (UGC) has announced that the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is not a recognized university degree anymore. UGC has also issued warning against MPhil program in universities and cautioned students against pursuing it.
Earlier, UGC has declared the MPhil degree illegitimate, instructing higher educational institutions not to offer MPhil program.
Additionally, the commission have directed universities to halt admissions to the MPhil program for the academic year 2023-24.
“It has come to the notice of the UGC that a few universities are inviting fresh applications for MPhil (Master of Philosophy) program. In this regard, it is to bring to the notice that the MPhil degree is not a recognized degree,” UGC stated in an official notification.
“The discontinuation of MPhil Degree is as per clause 14 of University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022,” the notification further read.
