Seven labourers died and one sustained injuries after a construction lift collapsed in Thane, Maharashtra, on Sunday.

Thane: In a tragic incident, seven labourers died and one sustained injuries after a construction lift collapsed in Thane, Maharashtra, on Sunday.

The tragic event took place at around 5:30 p.m. as the workers were coming down from a 40-story building after completing waterproofing work on the terrace.

According to the head of the disaster management cell in Thane, Yasin Tadvi, the mishap occurred when one of the supporting cables of the construction lift snapped.

He added that it was a construction lift and not a regular elevator that fell from the 40th floor and landed three levels underground in the parking area.

Eyewitnesses immediately alerted the local fire department and police station.

The deceased were identified as Mahendra Chaupal (32), Rupesh Kumar das (21), Haroon Shaikh (47), Mithlesh (35), Karidas (38) and Sunil Kumar das (21); the seventh victim has not been identified yet.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.

“Shocking! The lift accident in Thane is very tragic. I express my deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this accident. Wishing speedy recovery to the injured ones,” Fadnavis said in a post on social media platform X.
