Maharashtra’s Dahi Puri tops list of Worst-Rated Indian Street Foods

Taste Atlas compiled a list of the "worst-rated Indian street foods," and surprisingly, Maharashtra's beloved Dahi Puri claimed the top spot.

If you’re a Mumbai native or have had the pleasure of visiting this vibrant city, you’re likely well-acquainted with its diverse array of street foods. Mumbai is famous for its delicious Vada Pav, Dahi Puri, and Bombay Sandwich, all of which are popular choices for breakfast, lunch, high tea, or anytime you’re craving a tasty bite.

However, a recent ranking by Taste Atlas, a renowned travel guide for traditional cuisine, has stirred up some controversy. Taste Atlas compiled a list of the “worst-rated Indian street foods,” and surprisingly, Maharashtra’s beloved Dahi Puri claimed the top spot.

Taste Atlas collected ratings until August 17, receiving a total of 2,508 submissions. However, only 1,773 of these ratings were deemed legitimate. Here’s a look at the top-ranked street foods that faced criticism:

Dahi Puri (Maharashtra): Maharashtra’s famous Dahi Puri landed the unenviable title of the worst-rated Indian street food.

Sev (Madhya Pradesh): A spicy and savory noodle-like snack made from gram flour, seasoned with spices like ajwain and turmeric, Sev from Madhya Pradesh secured the second-lowest ranking.

Dabeli (Gujarat): The flavorful Dabeli from Gujarat wasn’t spared either, earning the third spot on the list.

Bombay Sandwich (Maharashtra): Despite its reputation for being filling and healthy, the Bombay Sandwich faced disappointment from many eaters and landed in fourth place.

Egg Bhurji: Even the beloved Egg Bhurji didn’t escape criticism, making an appearance on the list.

Dahi Vada: This yogurt-soaked delight also found itself in the rankings.

Sabudana Vada: Sabudana Vada, a popular snack made from tapioca pearls, was not immune to criticism.

Papri Chaat (North India): Papri Chaat, a common dish in North India, surprisingly took the seventh spot.

Gobi Paratha (Punjab): Punjab’s Gobi Paratha, a stuffed flatbread, ranked ninth among the least favored street foods.

Bonda (Southern India): Last but not least, Southern India’s Bonda, a bite-sized fried snack, rounded out the list.

Interestingly, a few months ago, Mumbai’s Vada Pav earned global recognition, securing the 13th position in the list of the world’s best sandwiches. This iconic street food, invented by a vendor named Ashok Vaidya near Dadar train station in the 1960s and 1970s, was lauded for its portability, affordability, and ease of preparation.
