Actress Jayaprada moves Madras High Court challenging conviction, 6 month imprisonment

Actress Jayaprada has taken her case to the Madras High Court after receiving a six-month imprisonment sentence from a magistrate court.

New Delhi: Popular Indian actress Jayaprada has taken her case to the Madras High Court after receiving a six-month imprisonment sentence from a magistrate court. This sentence was a result of her failure to pay contributions to the Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) for employees who worked in a cinema theatre she owned, which is now closed.

Presiding over the case, Justice G Jayachandran has given the ESIC one week to provide a response to Jayaprada’s plea.

Additionally, the judge asked Jayaprada’s legal counsel to clarify whether the outstanding amount of Rs 37.68 lakh can be paid within this time frame.

The High Court will continue to review the case on October 11th.

The legal issues began on August 10th of this year, when the Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Chennai sentenced Jayaprada and her co-accused in the case. The complaint against them was filed by the ESIC, which claimed that although the cinema theatre owned by Jayaprada had deducted the ESI amount from workers’ wages, it had not paid this money to the State Insurance Corporation.

Jayaprada and her brothers, Ramkumar and Raj Babu, were partners in Jayaprada Cinema, which ceased operation around a decade ago.

Under Section 40 of the ESI Act, the principal employer is obligated to pay both the employer’s and employees’ share of contributions. The principal employer can recover the employees’ share of contributions from their wages.

Legal representation for Jayaprada is being provided by senior counsel Abdul Hameed and advocate Revathi Manivannan.
