Girls turn boys at 12 in this village due to ‘genetic disorder’

Mystery shrouds behind an unusual happening that takes place in a village of Dominican Republic where girls turn boys at the age of 12. Scientists claim it to be a genetic disorder.

Born as girls, many children in Salinas village of the Dominican Republic turn into boys and grow penises when they hit puberty.

“It is estimated that one in 90 children born in Salinas in the Dominican Republic make the transition by the time they reach 12”, reports Daily Mail.

As per reports, girls in this isolated Caribbean village develop male reproductive organ at a certain age.

This genetic disorder is so rampant in this village that the abnormality is no longer considered astonishing while such cases are referred to as the ‘guevedoces’ which literally means ‘penis at 12’.

Such children, known as pseudohermaphrodite, were explored in BBC2 series Countdown to Life – the Extraordinary Making of You. The makers of this documentary met Johnny, who was a girl child by birth and named as Felicitia but later turned into a boy. As reported, the changing process began for Felicitia when she was 7 years old.

Scientists have claimed it to be a genetic disorder.
