Bhubaneswar: Teachers’ Day, which marks the birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a celebrated Indian scholar and former President of the country, was observed across Odisha on Tuesday.
On this occasion, students of all schools, colleges and other educational institutions of the state organized special programmes to make the day memorable for their teachers. They revered their teachers, whom they termed the living form of god, by washing their feet, applying tilak on their foreheads and lighting incense sticks for them. They also prayed for the well-being of the teachers.
“In Indian culture, teacher is the living form of Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara. That is why there is the famous line – “Gurur Brahma Gurur Vishnu Gurur Devo Mahesh Varah Guru Shakshat Para Brahma Tasmai Shri Gurave Namah.” It is because of them that we get all knowledge. On this auspicious occasion, we worshiped our teachers and prayed for their well being,” said a student of Saraswati Sishu Mandir of Unit-8.
Each year, Teacher’s Day is celebrated on the 5th September in honour of Radhakrishnan, who was born on September 5, 1888. Dr. Radhakrishnan was India’s first Vice President and second President. He was a great scholar, philosopher and Bharat Ratna recipient. Since 1962 – the year he became President – India is commemorating Dr. Radhakrishnan’s birth anniversary by paying tribute to its teachers and gurus on this day.
