Massive elephant herd creates panic in Angul villages

Angul: In yet another case of  man-animal conflict over shrinking dwelling areas, at least 23 wild elephants sneaked into the villages located near Talcher in the district on Wednesday and left people in a state of panic.

The Jumbo herd sneaked into Hariharpur, Kakudi and Kankili villages in Talcher from Basulei village under Parjang Tehsil of Dhenkanal district last night. After reaching near the paddy fields in the village, swimming through the Brahmani River, the pachyderms destroyed acres of crops and tried to enter into the human habitat this morning.

After getting intimation on the elephant incursion, Talcher Forest Range officials have reached the villages and are trying to disperse the animals by beating drums and firing crackers.

Sources in the forest department said all precautions are being taken to prevent the wild elephants from entering into the village as they are just 500 metres away from the village. Any whimsical measure could result in a widespread loss of life and property, they added.
