Bengaluru: In a bid to boost and promote Odia language in the capital city of Karnataka, the city based Godwin Public School will introduce ‘Odia’ as an optional subject from the upcoming academic session of 2018-19.

This initiative was announced by the Principal of the Public School, Jagdish Kumar during the 21st annual day celebration of the school here last week.

Kumar also informed that Odia classes will be held every Saturday and Sunday and Odia teachers will soon be recruited in this regard.

“Odia is the mother tongue of almost 40% of the total students in the school. Introduction of Odia subject in the syllabus has been a long standing demand of the parents and guardians. Hence, we approached Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik as well as the School and Mass Education Minister Badri Narayan Patra in this connection,” Kumar said on the occasion.

“The Chief Minister has also assured us to provide assistance to launch Odia subject here,” he added.

Moreover, essay and debate competitions will be conducted in Odia language, aiming to promote Odia language in the Silicon Valley of the country, the Principal said.

With this move, Odia speaking people, particularly the parents and guardians of the students in the Public School, have been ecstatic as their children can now study Odia, staying far away from their state.

Among others, former Director of HAL Padma Shri N.R. Mohanty, former Chief Secretary of Karnataka Subash Chandra Khuntia, Senior Congress leader M.V. Rjashekharan and social activist from Odisha Lalit Nayak were present during the annual day celebration of the school.
