Berhampur: A man was killed and seven others sustained critical injuries after a tractor overturned in an alleged race with another tractor at Madanmohanpur village under Digapahandi Police Station area on Thursday.
While the deceased has been identified as Sajid Ur Husain, all the victims are daily wagers from Malda area of neighbouring West Bengal state.
The mishap took place early in the morning while the labourers were on their way to work at a telephone tower construction site near the village boarding a tractor. Another tractor coming from behind on Madanmohanpur road tried to overtake their vehicle and ended up dashing against it causing it to overturn. While Sajid died on the spot, seven others boarding the tractor sustained critical injury in the mishap.
The injured were rushed to Digapahandi Community Health Centre (CHC) by police who had reached the spot immediately.
An investigation by police is underway to catch the driver of the other tractor which managed to escape from the spot after the accident.
