Incessant rain defers inauguration of Gurupriya setu

Malkangiri: The incessant heavy rain forced the state government on Monday to deferred the inauguration of much-awaited Gurupriya setu (bridge) on the Gurupriya river in the district.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik was slated to inaugurate the bridge on July 18.

Now the day of the inauguration of the Gurupriya setu will be finalised next week, informed Malkangiri information and public relation officer Manas Mishra.

He further informed that the Chief Minister will inaugurate the Gurupriya Bridge along with a seven-storey hospital in the district.

Notably, former Chief Minister Janaki Ballabh Patnaik had laid the foundation stone of the 910-meter-long Gurupriya setu in 1982 and again by current CM Naveen Patnaik in 2000.

Since Maoists have been opposing the construction of the project, security has been tightened along with round-the-clock. Six high-resolution CCTV cameras have been installed at different locations of the bridge to protect the bridge.

The 910-metre long bridge is expected to resolve all the problems of communication for around 30,000 people of nearly 150 villages in the cut-off area in and around the Kalimela and Chitrakonda reservoirs.
