Five members of city hotelier’s family charred to death

Fire tragedyBhubaneswar: In a heart-wrenching incident, at least five family members of Pal Heights hotel owner Satpal Singh died in a fire tragedy at his residence in Budheswari Colony here in the wee hours today.

The deceased have been identified as Satpal’s younger son Gagan Pal Singh (40), daughter-in-law Bhavana Singh (38), granddaughter Sohabi Singh (15) and grandson Rubir Singh (8), and house maid Khusi Das (15).

Satpal, who has sustained injuries, was admitted to a private hospital. A total of six members of the family, including the house maid, were rescued from the house in an unconscious state and immediately rushed to the hospital. However, five of them were declared brought dead.

Talking to Kalinga TV, a police official said, “Satpal’s neighbours spotted smoke coming out of his house and called up the police control no 100 at around 5 am,. We immediately informed the fire personnel about the incident.”

“We rescued the family members of the hotelier and rushed to the hospital at the earliest,” he added.

Short circuit from AC is suspected to be the reason behind the fire tragedy, police said.  Meanwhile, a scientific team has reached the spot for further investigation.
