Chilika Boat Capsize: Transport Minister Orders Probe

Bhubaneswar: Transport Minister Nrusingha Charan Sahu on Monday ordered a probe into the Chilika boat capsize mishap that claimed 6 lives on Saturday.

The Director of Ports and Inland Water Transport has been directed to probe. As per reports, the investigation will be initiated based on three different angles.

On June 16, a country boat carrying 16 tourists on board, capsized in the middle of Chilika lake while returning to Balugaon from Kalijai temple, buffeted by strong winds and rains.

A team of at least 40 personnel comprising of fire officers, ODRAF, naval force, police and boatmen from the lake carried out the operation to fish out the bodies.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressing grief, had announced Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia for the kin of the deceased and free treatment to all the injured.

It is not clear if the tourists were on a licensed boat but preliminary investigation reveals that life jackets were not provided by the boatman to the tourists and also there has been other violations of the Odisha Boat Rules.
