More than 50 killed in explosion at Kabul mosque

Kabul: A powerful blast hit a mosque in western Kabul during prayers, killing more than 50 in a spate of attacks on worship places in Afghanistan and the civilian were targeted during the holy month of Ramadan.

The blast took place at the Khalifa Sahib Mosque in the west of the capital in the early afternoon, said Besmullah Habib, deputy spokesman for the interior ministry.

The attack took place when the worshippers at the Sunni mosque gathered after Friday prayers for a congregation known as Zikr, an act of religious remembrance practised by some Muslims.

They believed it was a suicide bomber who joined them in the ceremony and detonated explosives, said Sayed Fazil Agha, the head of the mosque.

According to health source, hospitals had received 66 dead bodies and 78 wounded people so far.

Recently, bombs were exploded on two passenger vans carrying Shi’ite Muslims in the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif on Thursday, killing at least nine people. and another blast also took place at a Sunni mosque during Friday prayers in the city of Kunduz, killing 33 people.
