Woman trampled to death by wild elephant in Kalahandi

Bhawanipatna: In yet another case of man-animal conflict in the State, a woman lost her life after being trampled by a wild elephant in Sripalli village under Narla police limits in Kalahandi district today.

The deceased has been identified as Banita Podha.

As per the report, Banita had gone to collect ‘Mahula’ flowers from a forest located near the village this morning along with her daughter when the incident occurred. A wild jumbo which had sneaked into the area in search of food pounced on her while she was busy picking up flowers and killed her on the spot.

However, the pachyderm didn’t attack the victim’s daughter and left the spot.

Getting information on the incident Narla forest officials rushed to the spot and sent the body for autopsy after rescuing the girl.

Forest Department has assured compensation to the next of kin of the deceased in the incident after a probe.
