Ipoh: Odisha’s young striker Shilanand Lakra scored his first international goal in the ongoing 27th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament in Ipoh (Malaysia) on Sunday.

Shilanand scored the maiden goal against England. His goal helped the senior Indian team to end the match in a 1-1 draw. With the draw India gained their first points in the tournament. This was Shilanand’s second international match. He had made his international debut against Argentina in the same championship on Saturday.

India took the 1-0 lead after England lost possession of the ball in their own half and Ramandeep Singh’s pass to the striking circle was hit first-time by Talwinder Singh. But England’s goalkeeper George Pinner could only parry it straight to Shilanand, who put the ball into the back of the net in the 14th minute.

India managed to maintain the lead till the fourth quarter until the English earned a penalty stroke in the 52nd minute. Mark Gleghorne fired a fierce stroke down the left to beat India’s young goalkeeper Krishan B. Pathak.

In the final eight minutes, neither of the teams could find the equaliser, settling for a draw.
