Centre seeks clarification over setting up of Legislative Council in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The central government on Saturday sought clarification in the matter of setting up of the Legislative Council (Vidhan Parisha) in Odisha.

As per reports, in a letter the Centre today sought clarification to State over the setting up of Vidhan Parishad in Odisha. The Speaker of Odisha Assembly Surya Narayan Patro informed that the letter has been forwarded to the Parliamentary Affairs Department of the Government of Odisha.

It is to be noted that Odisha Assembly Speaker earlier had expressed shock and displeasure on Centre’s reply that it has not received any resolution from Odisha government on setting up of Legislative Council (Vidhan Parishad) in the state as replying to a question of BJD MP Prasanna Acharya in Rajya Sabha, Union Minister of Law and Justice, Kiren Rijiju had said that the Central government did not received any resolution adopted by the state assembly for the formation of the Council in Odisha.

Expressing dismay over this statement of Rijiju, the Assembly Speaker had said that the same was forwarded way back in 2018 after the State Assembly passed a resolution to that effect.

Patro said the Assembly had passed the resolution on September 6, 2018 and submitted the same to the Centre on September 18, 2018.

The Assembly resolution was submitted to the Secretary General of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha and also to the Secretary of Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and Law & Justice, Patro said.
