Burglars loot temple in Puri; decamp with antique idols, ornaments

Puri: A group of unidentified miscreants burgled idols and ornaments of deities worth lakhs after entering into the Jayadurga Thakurani temple located in Nuagaon near Sakhigopal area under Satyabadi block in the district last night.

The incident came to light after priests reached the temple to conduct ‘puja’ this morning. After finding the gate lock of the temple broken they immediately called up Satyabadi Police and informed the matter.

A police team which reached the spot later in the morning and conducted an investigation found ‘Astadhatu’(eight metals) idol of Goddess Jayadurga missing from the temple along with antique idols of lord Neelakantha, Gopinatha, Somanath, Radhakrushna and five other Parshva Devatas.

Police have registered a case in the incident and started investigation.

Notably, looters had decamped with idols, ornaments and cash worth over two lakhs from the famous Nrusinghanath temple of Rendhagarh village under Brahmagiri block of the district in a similar fashion on January 9, this year. However, the stolen idols were later found dumped near a river flowing close to the area where the temple is located sans the ornaments and other valuables.
