Jagatsinghpur: A 50-year-old man was charred to death and his mother suffered severe burn injuries in a house fire at Ogarpur village under Balikuda Police limits in the wee hours on Thursday.

The deceased has been identified as Pradipta Ghosh. He was a bachelor.

“The incident occurred in the wee hours. Pradipta and his mother Renubala alerted the neighbours, who rushed to the spot but unfortunately found Pradipta dead,”said Amiya Senapati, a villager.

“The neighbours however rescued Renubala with severe burn injuries”, he added

70-year-old Renubala was immediately rushed to the district headquarters hospital and later shifted SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack as her condition had deteriorated.

“I and my son were sleeping at our one room house. Some miscreant(s) poured fuel from the window gap and set the house,” said Renubala while talking to Kalinga TV.

A case has been registered at Balikuda Police station in this connection. Balikuda Police IIC Sarbeswar Behera confirmed the smell of kerosene coming from the gutted house.

“The house reeks of kerosene. We are looking into various angles of this case. Once the autopsy and forensic reports come, we will intensify our investigation,” Behera said.

The family was attacked with fire for the second time. Around six months ago, some miscreant(s) had allegedly set on their house on fire but the local youths rescued both the son and mother.
