World Athletics meet begins today; Dutee, Jauna to participate

Jauna, DuteeLondon: The World Athletics Championships will begin here today. Two sprinters of Odisha Dutee Chand and Jauna Murmu, along with 23 other Indian athletes, are taking part in the 10-day long global event.

Dutee will compete in 100 metre, 200 metre and 100X4 relay race while Jauna will try her luck in women’s 400 metre hurdles in the Championships.

India has taken part in every championship since the first one in 1983 but legendary long jumper Anju Bobby George’s bronze in Paris 2003 has been the lone medal won by an Indian at this competition.

The star attraction at the World Athletics is Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt. The eight-time Olympic champion will compete in the 100m and 4x100m relay and bid farewell to competitive sport after the event.
