In a gripping match at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium, the Indian men’s hockey team secured a 3-2 victory over the Republic of Korea in the Asian Champions Trophy league match on Monday.

The Indian team displayed skill and determination to overcome the defending champions, Korea, in a thrilling showdown. While India emerged victorious, they could have widened the score margin further if they had capitalized on their chances, including a penalty stroke opportunity.

The goals for India were netted by Nilakanta Sharma (6′), Harmanpreet Singh (23′), and Mandeep Singh (33′). On the other hand, Korea responded with goals from Kim Sunghhyun (12′) and Jihun Yang. This triumph placed India at the summit of the pool table.

The match commenced with an exciting display from both sides, showcasing their abilities on the field. India found their rhythm early on as Nilakanta Sharma scored in the 6th minute, thanks to a well-executed play initiated by Sukhjeet.

Korea swiftly equalized with a goal from Kim Sunghhyun in the 12th minute, set up by Manjae Jung. India reclaimed the lead with a penalty corner goal by Harmanpreet Singh in the 23rd minute, empowering them to pressurize the Korean defense further.

In the third quarter, Mandeep Singh extended India’s lead to 3-1 with a superb goal set up by Shamsher. The experienced striker displayed skill and finesse, further strengthening India’s position.

Although India was awarded a penalty stroke in the final quarter, it was saved by Kim Jaehyeon, preventing India from increasing their lead. The match’s later minutes saw a resilient performance from Jaehyeon, who made several impressive saves to maintain Korea’s chances.

Korea managed to score a late goal through a penalty corner executed by Jihun Yang in the 58th minute. Despite their efforts, India held onto their lead, securing a well-deserved victory and claiming three crucial points to lead the table.
