India lifts it’s first-ever Women’s Junior Hockey Asia Cup

India defeated four-time champions South Korea 2-1 to win their first Women's Junior Hockey Asia Cup in Kakamigahara, Japan on Sunday.

New Delhi: India defeated four-time champions South Korea 2-1 to win their first Women’s Junior Hockey Asia Cup in Kakamigahara, Japan on Sunday.

After a scoreless first quarter, India got things moving with Annu’s penalty corner goal in the 22nd minute. South Korea equalised three minutes later, with Park Seo Yeon scoring.

In the 41st minute, however, Neelum shot strongly to the bottom right of the South Korean custodian to make it 2-1. To secure the deal, the Indian defence held on to a slim lead in the third quarter.

Following the historic win, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Indian women’s team on winning the 2023 Women’s Hockey Junior Asia Cup.

PM Modi tweeted, “Congratulations to our young champions on winning the 2023 Women’s Hockey Junior Asia Cup! The team has shown immense perseverance, talent and teamwork. They have made our nation very proud. Best wishes to them for their endeavours ahead.”
