Day 2 of Men’s Hockey World Cup

After scintillating first two matches, day two has two Pool C matches today.

Bhubaneswar: The first encounter of Day 2 in the  Men’s Hockey World Cup is going to be in between Argentina and Spain. The Argentine will not have an easy first match but it will help them as they landed first in Bhubaneswar and have had a chance to get adjusted here. Former player and coach Carlos Retegui Chapa’s experience will come in handy for the South Americans. Drag-flicker Gonzalo Peillat had been the highest scorer for Argentina in 2014 and 2016 World Cup but has since then failed to impress. Let’s hope he brings back his magic. The Spaniards currently ranked eight had a golden run till a decade ago.  Goalkeeper Quico Cortes and Sergi Enrique would be spearheading the Spanish challenge and will hope to regain their lost glory in the 14th edition of Men’s Hockey World Cup.

Today’s match two will be played in between New Zealand and France. The Black Sticks New Zealand led by Blair Tarrant is considered to be the ‘dark horses’ of the tournament. This is also their tenth appearance in a World Cup. The team has the just right combination of experience and youth. They could easily crack any good team’s Hockey World Cup dreams. Meanwhile, the French have made it to Bhubaneswar by beating Wales, Scotland, and Poland in the Hockey World League; but losing to Ireland in finals. New Zealand had three practice matches before coming to Bhubaneswar and would be looking forward to a good start.

The second day’s first match is scheduled to start at 5 pm IST, while the second at 7 pm IST. Both matches will be held at Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar. These will also be telecast on Start Sports network and Doordarshan as well.
