Elephant calf rescued from canal in Khurda

Khurda: Forest officials rescued an elephant calf from an abandoned canal in Khajuripada village under Tangi block in the district, today morning.

Some locals spotted the calf in Rameshwar-Nirakarpur canal early in the morning and called up the Tangi Forest Range officials. The calf was rescued from the canal after a Herculean effort of the officials and villagers.

Following the rescue, locals in the area have claimed that elephant herds were roaming around in Rameshwar, Nirakarpur and Chitrakut foothills in last few days and the calf might have been separated from a herd which had sneaked into Rameshwar area, last night. Locals also demanded proactive measures from the forest department to check elephant moment in the area to prevent any damage to property and lives.

Efforts are on by the forest department to send the rescued elephant calf to Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar.
