Child Line stops Child Marriage in Gajapati

Child Marriage in Gajapati Paralakhemundi: Acting on a tip off, a special team of the district Child Line on Wednesday stopped a child marriage scheduled to be held in Paralakhemundi town in Gajapati district on Thursday.

A team of the child line consisting of Sai Prasad Samal, Center Coordinator and Premika Bhuyan, team member, visited the spot after getting information about the child marriage.

The team, with the help of the local police, counseled the parents of the 14-year-old bride and the groom, who subsequently agreed not to go ahead with the marriage.

The kin of both the bride and groom claimed that they were unaware of the Child Marriage Act.

Besides, they gave a written assurance not to solemnize the marriage of the minor girl until she becomes 18 years old, the legal age for marriage.

The child line team assured to provide support to the girl child as per the schemes of the state government.

The team also informed the CDPO, Supervisor and CWC of the district about the matter.
