Bird census at Hirakud Dam to start tomorrow

The annual bird census at Hirakud Reservoir in Odisha's Sambalpur district will be held tomorrow, informed the officials of the Hirakud Wildlife Division.

Sambalpur: The annual bird census at Hirakud Reservoir in Odisha’s Sambalpur district will be held tomorrow, informed the officials of the Hirakud Wildlife Division.

According to sources, 32 teams will be engaged to conduct the census between 6 AM and 5 PM. There are as many as 78 persons including 33 ornithologists.

A total of 32 boats from Sambalpur, Bargarh and Jharsuguda will be used for the annual census, added the sources. Some fishermen who have experience of the counting of birds also will assist the expert teams.

The teams will begin the counting from eight different places and cover around 500 square kilometers from the Hirakud Dam to the bordering area of Chhattisgarh state.

Over 3.16 lakh migratory birds of 108 species had come to the reservoir last year, said the officials of the Hirakud Wildlife Division.

It is to be noted here that the annual bird counting in Chilika Lake was conducted on Thursday. The record revealed a marginal rise in bird count this year as around 11.37 lakh winged guests were seen this winter season against 11.32 lakh in 2023.
