Winter session of Parliament to be held from December 4 to December 22

The Winter session of Parliament for the year 2023 is set to begin on December 4 and will run until December 22.

New Delhi: The Winter session of Parliament for the year 2023 is set to begin on December 4 and will run until December 22. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi, has called for an all-party meeting on December 2 at 11 am to discuss about the upcoming session on behalf of the Government.

This meeting usually takes place a day before the session begins. However this time, it is two days before the beginning of Winter session 2023 of the Parliament. This is possibly due to the vote counting for five states on December 3 where elections are ongoing.

During this winter session, the Ethics Committee will present their report on the ‘cash-for-query’ accusations against Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra in the Lok Sabha. The House needs to adopt the report before any suggested expulsion by the panel takes effect.

Additionally, three important bills aiming to replace the IPC, CrPC, and the Evidence Act may be considered during this Winter session of the Parliament. The standing committee on Home recently endorsed these reports.

Another significant bill awaiting discussion in the Parliament is about the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners. Although previously introduced during the Monsoon session, its passage was not pursued in the special session amid opposition protests and concerns from former chief election commissioners.

The bill aims to align the status of the CEC and ECs with that of the cabinet secretary, who currently enjoy the status of the CEC and ECs with that of the cabinet secretary, who currently enjoys a status similar to a Supreme Court judge.
