Vertical Drilling begins for alternate route in Silkyara Tunnel Rescue Operation

Officials have initiated vertical drilling from the hilltop above the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarakhand to enhance rescue operation.

Dehradun: Officials have initiated vertical drilling from the hilltop above the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi as part of efforts to create an alternate route for the rescue of 41 trapped workers. Manual drilling, a crucial step in the operation, is set to begin on Sunday.

Horizontal drilling faced challenges on Friday, and the extent of the issue became clear on Saturday when the auger machine used for drilling was reported as “busted” by international tunnelling expert Arnold Dix.

The damaged blades of the auger machine are currently being manually cut down, a process expected to conclude today.

Once the auger machine is removed from the escape pipe, manual drilling for approximately 10 meters will commence.

The rescue operation in Uttarakhand’s Silkyara tunnel has been ongoing for the past 15 days, with authorities working diligently to overcome obstacles and ensure the safe extraction of the trapped workers. Further details on the progress of the rescue efforts will follow.
