Rahul Gandhi’s Lok Sabha membership restored

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's parliamentary membership has been restored, days after the Supreme Court had put a stay on his conviction

New-Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s parliamentary membership has been restored, days after the Supreme Court had put a stay on his conviction in a criminal defamation case for his ‘Modi surname’ remark.

A notification from the Lok Sabha secretariat read that Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification as a Lok Sabha member stood revoked.

On August 4, the Supreme Court stayed Rahul Gandhi’s conviction in a 2019 criminal defamation case over his ‘Modi surname’ remarks. He was sentenced to two years in jail, following which his parliamentary membership was automatically revoked.

Rahul Gandhi was serving as an MP from the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency in Kerala from 2019 before being disqualified in March this year after his conviction.

He was disqualified as a Lok Sabha member on March 23 after a Gujarat court convicted him in a defamation case and sentenced him to two years in jail. A punishment for two years and above automatically disqualifies a lawmaker.
