PM Narendra Modi on Friday proposed India as the host for the UN Climate Conference in 2028 at COP28 Summit 2023.

Dubai: In a significant move during the UN climate conference in Dubai, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday proposed India as the host for the UN Climate Conference in 2028, also known as COP33. Alongside this announcement, he unveiled the Green Credit Initiative, an ambitious program aimed at fostering carbon sinks through active public participation.

In his address to the high-level segment attended by heads of states and governments, Prime Minister Modi highlighted India’s exemplary commitment to balancing development and environmental conservation. He asserted that India stands out as one of the few countries making substantial progress towards achieving its Nationally Determined Contributions, aligning with global efforts to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

During the opening plenary, where Modi was the sole leader alongside COP28 President Sultan Al Jaber and UN Climate Change President Simon Steill, he emphasized the necessity of a just and inclusive energy transition worldwide. Modi urged wealthier nations to facilitate technology transfer to assist developing countries in their battle against climate change.

Notably, Prime Minister Modi championed the Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE) movement, advocating for eco-friendly living practices and a departure from consumerist behaviors. Citing a study by the International Energy Agency, he asserted that adopting this approach could result in a significant reduction of carbon emissions by 2 billion tonnes.

In his concluding remarks, Modi underscored the importance of protecting everyone’s interests and emphasized the necessity of global participation in the collective fight against climate change.
