Injured Indian Navy Sailor Abhilash Tomy Rescued From Indian Ocean

New Delhi: Indian Navy Officer Commander Abhilash Tomy, who was injured while taking part in round-the-world race has been rescued from the Indian Ocean.

The 39-year-old Naval Officer had lost the mast of his yatch in a sea storm. He suffered a major back injury after his vessel was hit by a powerful sea storm, with 14-metre high waves and wind at 130 kmph in the southern Indian Ocean. The rescue operation was tough and rescuers faced extreme diffuclties in making direct contact with Tomy as the main satellite of his phone was damaged.

A Defence Spokesperson had said bad weather and rough sea were creating hurdles for the rescuers to reach Tomy whose yatch was marooned in the Indian Ocean. The yacht was located by Navy aircraft on Sunday.

Navy Spokesperson DK Sharma said that Tomy was pulled out by rescuers on a stretcher by French Fishing Vessel Osiris. He added that Tomy is absolutely safe and conscious now.
