India’s Aditya L1 Spacecraft nears Final Phase; confirms ISRO

India’s pioneering space mission, Aditya L1 is approaching its final phase, said ISRO Chairman S Somanath.

Bengaluru: India’s pioneering space mission, Aditya L1, designed to study the Sun, is approaching its final phase. The maneuvers are set to position it at the Lagrangian point L1 by January 7, 2024, as per the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman S Somanath.

Chairman Somanath, speaking at an event marking the 60th year of the First Sounding Rocket Launch, said, “Aditya L1 has reached its near-final stage. The ongoing preparations are gradually gearing up for its entry into the L1 point.”

“Aditya is on the way. I think it has reached almost its final phase,” stated Somanath, adding, “Possibly by January 7, the final maneuvers will be done for entering into the L1 point.”

Aditya L1 was successfully launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota on September 2. After covering approximately 1.5 million km over 125 days, the spacecraft is set to be positioned in a Halo orbit around the Lagrangian point L1.  Lagrangian point L1 is the region closest to the Sun.

The primary objective of the mission is to conduct scientific experiments, including capturing and transmitting images of the Sun. The information gathered will contribute significantly to enhancing understanding of solar phenomena.
