India reports 5 covid deaths, 335 cases in last 24 hours

On Sunday, India recorded 335 fresh cases of Covid-19 and 5 deaths due to Covid, as per reports from the Union Health Ministry.

New Delhi: On Sunday December 17, 2023, India recorded as many as 335 fresh cases of Covid-19, as per reports from the Union Health Ministry. This has taken the number of active cases in the country to 1701. Further, five deaths have also been reported in the country.

Four out of the five deaths have been reported from Kerala and one in Uttar Pradesh, confirmed reports from reliable sources. The current caseload of Covid-19 in India stands at 4.50 crore while the death toll stands at around five lakhs.

Moreover, the recovery rate at the national level currently stands at 98.81 percent while the fatality rate touches 1.19 percent.

Earlier on Saturday, the Centre confirmed one positive case of Covid sub-variant JN.1 in Kerala. The infected person has been identified as a 79-year-old elderly woman who was down with symptoms of mild influenza like illness.

Reportedly, the JN.1 variant is very similar to the BA.2.86 variant. Cases of the BA.2.86 or the ‘Pirola’ variant have been on the rise in countries like US and China. Reportedly, a mock drill at health facilities across multiple states is being done to ensure the safety of public health and also hospital preparedness.
