Death toll rises to 120 in hooch tragedy in UP, Uttarakhand

Lucknow/ Dehradun: The death toll in the hooch tragedy has increased to 120 in Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Uttarakhand today.

As many as 70 persons have died in in Saharanpur and Kushinagar districts in UP,  while 50 deaths have been reported in Uttarakhand’s Haridwar district when the last reports came in.

The death toll is likely to rise as several people are battling for life after consuming spurious liquor yesterday.

The UP State government has suspended District Excise officers of Saharanpur and Kushinagar districts. The Sarnhanpur police has arrested at least 30 persons and seized more than 400 litres of illicit liquor in different places in the district last night.

In the neighbouring state of Uttarakhand, at least 13 government employees have been suspended in this connection.

Meanwhile, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath as well as Uttarakhand CM Trivendra Singh Rawat have separately announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for those undergoing treatment in their respective States.
