Cyclone Mocha update: Deep Depression to turn into Cyclone today

The Indian Meteorological Department has informed that the deep depression over BoB will turn into ‘cyclone Mocha in the next 12 hours.

New Delhi: The Indian Meteorological Department has informed that the depression formed over the south-east Bay of Bengal is moving north-west at a speed of 5 km per hour and will turn into ‘cyclone Mocha’while moving in north-north westards  in the next 12 hours.

IMD has also predicted that the Cyclone Mocha forming over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a very severe storm by Friday, May 12 where wind speeds can reach 100-120 kmph.

The well-marked low-pressure area concentrated into a depression on Tuesday evening packing wind speeds of 45 to 55 kmph and gusting to 65 kmph over the south-east Bay of Bengal, the India Meteorological Department said.

The deep depression will be condensed into Cyclone Mocha in the next 12 hours, with wind speeds of 80-90 kmph and gusting to 100 kmph. It will turn into a severe cyclone by May 12. It will move initially north-north westwards till May 12 morning, IMD added.

Then the storm Mocha will change course and head north-north-east towards Bangladesh and northern Myanmar. Mocha will pass over South East Bangladesh and North Myanmar in the morning on the 14th May. During the severe cyclonic storm tomorrow, the wind speed may remain at 100 to 120 km per hour.

Wind speed will increase from tomorrow night. When it turns into a severe storm, the wind speed can reach up to 140 to 150 km per hour and it increase up to 165 km per hour.

The sea will be very rough today. So, fishermen, small ships, boats and trawlers are advised not to venture into southeast and central Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea from Tuesday onwards. Those over central Bay of Bengal and north Andaman Sea are advised to return on Tuesday.

Though, Cyclone Mocha will be formed over Bay of Bengal, it will not impact Odisha and West Bengal.
