Congress fields BK Hariprasad as candidate for Rajya Sabha deputy chairman poll

New Delhi: Congress on Wednesday nominated BK Hariprasad as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha deputy chairman election, scheduled to be held on August 9.

The Congress decided to field its nominee as the joint opposition candidate after the other parties in the opposition bloc chose not to nominate their members.

Sixty-four-year-old Hariprasad is a Congress member of Rajya Sabha from Karnataka. He is also a general secretary of the All India Congress Committee.

Earlier, Hariprasad was in charge of Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee for nearly four years.

Meanwhile, the BJP has reached out neutral parties like the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) for a consensus on the name of NDA’s nominee Harivansh Narayan Singh for the post.

Today is the last date for filing of nominations for the poll. The post fell vacant after the retirement of PJ Kurien (INC) in June.
