Ashok Gehlot appointed as next chief minister of Rajasthan

Jaipur: Ending days of speculation, Congress President Rahul Gandhi appointed Ashok Gehlot as the next chief minister of Rajasthan on Friday.

Rahul also posted Sachin Pilot, the other top contender of the CM post, as the Deputy Chief Minister of the state.

It was a tough time for the Congress to pick the new CM of the state between Gehlot and Pilot after the grand old party dethroned the Vasundhara Raje-led BJP government on December 11.

While Gehlot won the assembly election from the Sardarpura constituency with a vote margin of over 40,000 votes, Sachin Pilot, who contested the election for the first time from Tonk constituency won with over 54,000 vote margin.

Rajasthan voted on December 7 and the results were announced on December 11. The Pilot-led Congress party won 99 seats, one short of the majority. He then held parleys with Independents to ensure his party does not fall short of numbers after the party staked claim to form the government. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Samajwadi Party also offered support to Congress.

Meanwhile, a delegation of the state unit of the Congress party will meet Governor Kalyan Singh at 7 pm today to seek his permission to form the government in the state.
