Chennai: India’s first engine-less semi-high speed train – “Train 18” – was flagged off by Railway Board Chairman Ashwani Lohani here on Monday.
Here are 10 interesting facts about Rs 100-crore indigenously developed engineless train:
- Train 18 has a potential to travel up to the speed at 160 kmph as against 130 kmph for Shatabdis.
- India’s first engine-less train was developed by Chennai Integral Coach Factory in 18 months, the full AC train is designed in such a way that passengers can have a look at the driver’s cabin.
- Train-18 has two driving trailer coaches with aerodynamic driver’s cab (nose cone) on both the ends which will enable quicker turn-around time at destinations.
- The coach doors will open only when the train touches zero kmph and the train will start only when all the coach doors are properly closed
- The self-propelled train, fitted with CCTV cameras, will have two executive compartments comprising 52 seats each, whereas trailer coaches will have 78 seats each.
- Train 18 has diffused lighting, an on-board infotainment system with Wi-Fi, vacuum toilets, sliding doors besides a GPS-based passenger information system.
- The train will have automated sliding steps uptil the platform avoiding the risk of a passenger falling.
- Train 18, a 100 per cent ‘Make in India’ project, will have a stainless steel car body with LHB as the base design.
- A unique feature of the executive chair car seats is that they can be rotated 180 degrees to face fellow passengers and can be aligned in the direction of travel.
- A mini pantry will be instituted in each coach of Train 18 and will have state-of-the-art equipment
