Assamese Film ‘Village Rockstars’ India’s Official Entry For Oscars 2019

Mumbai: The Film Federation of India on Saturday revealed that Rima Das’ Assamese film ‘Village Rockstars’ will be India’s official entry for the 2019 Oscar Awards. The coming-of-age film had earlier bagged the Best Feature Film trophy at the 65th National Film Awards, besides also winning Best Child Artist, Best Location Sound Recordist and Best Editing.

The film was selected by the FFI jury team constituted under the leadership of producer Rajendra Singh Babu. The jury chose the Assamese film over other movies like Raazi, Padmaavat Hichki, October, Love Sonia, Gulabjaam, Mahanati, Pihu, Kadvi Hawa, Bhogda, Revaa, Bioscopewala, Manto, 102 Not out, Padman, Bhayanakam, Ajji, Nude and Gali Guliiyan.

Jury member Anant Mahadevan told The Indian Express, “Village Rockstars is the closest film made by international standards [sic]. Very proud and to select this film and send it to the Oscars.”

Set in director Rima Das’ native village Chhaygaon in Assam, Village Rockstars is a story about some poor but amazing children who live a colourful, fun-filled and a happy life. The narration revolves around a girl named Dhunu who aspired to become a rockstar.

The film had premiered at the Toronto Film Festival besides the Jio MAMI 19th Mumbai Film Festival in October last year.  It has screened in more than 70 international and national film festivals and won 44 awards. It is schedule to release in India on September 28, 2018.
