Actor and director Padma Shri Sadhu Meher passes away

He received National Award for Best Actor for his role in Hindi film 'Ankur' (1974). He was awarded with Padma Shri by Govt of India in 2017. Odisha Govt awarded him with Jayadev Samman

Bhubaneswar: Veteran actor and director Sadhu Meher passed away on Friday at the age of 84 years in his residence in Mumbai. He is well known in both Bollywood and Ollywood for his acting and directorial films. He was the lead actor in Sabyasachi Mohapatra’s National award winning film ‘Bhukha’.

Sadhu Meher was awarded Padma Shri in 2017. He was also felicitated with ‘Jaydev Samman’ by Odisha Government.

Sadhu Meher has super hit Hindi films like Bhuvan Shome, Ankur, and Mrigaya to his credit. He was given the National actor for Best Actor for ‘Ankur’.

As a director Sadhu Meher has films like Uttam Mohanty acted ‘Abhimaan’ and Aparichita, Abhilasha, Babula (children’s film) and Gopa Re Badhuchhi Kala Kanhei to his credit.

Sadhu Meher’s role in Anil Kapoor and Kajol directed Bollywood film ‘Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain’ (1999) had earned much popularity as a character artist.

Sadhu Meher has acted in both Odia and Hindi films. His acted other popular Hindi films include ’27 Down’, ‘Nishaant’, ‘Manthan’, ‘Inkaar’, ‘Safed Haathi’, ‘Debshishu’, ‘Shesha Drushti’ and Sabyasachi Mohapatra directed ‘Jai Jagannath’ that had been made in 15 languages.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik condoled death of late Sadhu Meher and wrote that he has carved a niche for himself for his acting in both Odia and Hindi films. He was the first Odia actor to get a National Award.
