Stock market opens higher; Nifty crosses 20,000 mark, Sensex gains 380 points

The S&P BSE Sensex climbed 375 points to 66,549.20, while the NSE Nifty 50 crossed the 20,000 mark with 113.60 points.

New Delhi: The Indian stock market indices BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty opened higher on Wednesday. The gain was led by a strong rally in stocks of information technology (IT) companies.

In the early trade, the S&P BSE Sensex climbed 375 points to 66,549.20, while the NSE Nifty 50 crossed the 20,000 mark with 113.60 points. The broader market indices also witnessed strong gains in line with the benchmarks.

Nifty IT was the top gainer with 1.5 per cent gain in early trade. Nifty Oil & Gas also gained over 1 per cent. Other heavyweight indices such as Nifty Bank and Nifty Financial Services also opened with significant gains.

The top five gainers on the Nifty 50 were Tech Mahindra, Wipro, Hero MotoCorp, LTIM, Bharti Airtel and HCLTech. In addition, IT heavyweights, Infosys and TCS, also registered strong gains in early trade. Meanwhile, Nestle India, Coal India, ONGC, BPCL and Bajaj Finance were the top five losers.
