Berhampur: At least 80 houses belonging to 60 families were gutted and property worth lakhs lost in a massive fire which broke out in Gayaganda village under Tarasingi Police Station area in Ganjam district last night.
Smokes were seen billowing out of a resident’s house late in the night following which villagers launched firefighting efforts. Clash between two groups over power theft allegation led to this mishap as one group set the houses on fire. The fire engulfed a major portion of the village reducing cash, furniture and other valuable assets worth lakhs to ashes.
The blaze was brought under control by a joint effort of Bhanjanagar, Jagannath Prasad and Daspalla fire brigade teams which reached the spot later in the night after getting intimation. At least six fire tenders were pressed into action in the village.
Meanwhile, locals have demanded compensation for the fire mishap affected families, who have been rendered homeless after the incident.
