Bhubaneswar: The state ruling BJD resorted to a unique way of demonstration against fuel price hike here on Thursday.

Among hundreds of BJD youth and students’ wing members, some rode bullock carts on the busy Lower PMG Square to protest oil price hike. Holding placards and shouting slogans against Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan they staged the demonstration.

Alleging that the Minister has failed badly to check the price hike of petrol and diesel, they demanded his resignation.

The protesters, led by former Odisha Food and Supply Minister Sanjay Das Burma, claimed that price of the essential commodities is skyrocketing due to the increase in oil price.

“The NDA government has increased price of petrol and diesel nine times since it came to power in 2014. It has affected the common people of the country. If the BJP-led Union government does not take any step to check oil price soon, we will intensify our agitation,” threatened Das Burma.

On the other hand, the state unit of BJP said BJD’s demonstration on oil price hike is nothing but a political gimmick.

Notably, the Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) on Tuesday hiked petrol and diesel prices by nine paise and 14-16 paise a litre respectively under the daily price revision mechanism following which the diesel prices rose to record high while the petrol was at three-year peak.

In Bhubaneswar, the cost of petrol was Rs 70.34 per litre while the price of diesel was Rs. 66.69 per litre.
