14 arrested; stolen goods worth Rs 25 lakh seized

Kendrapara: Kendrapara police arrested 14 persons and seized a huge quantity of stolen goods, including gold and silver ornaments, mobile phones, laptops, wrist watches, LED TVs, a Scootey and door and grills breaking instruments, worth about Rs 25 lakh late on Wednesday night. Ten of them were arrested for buying the stolen goods, Kendarapara SP Dayanidhi Gochhayat said.

According to the SP, while the special police squad and Pattamundai police were jointly conducting night patrolling at Choudakulat-Dandisahi road, they found six antisocial assembled at Dandisahi-based Brahmani bridge and engaged in distributing the stolen booty. The police team managed to nab four of them and seized some stolen items from their possessions.

The arrested persons have been identified as Sk Mustak alias Mitu (22), a resident  of Jaipura village under Kendrapara Town PS , Alok Mallick alias Baina (19), of Indupur village under Nikirai police limit, Sk. Israili alias Kala (20) of  Deobanda village of Nikirai police limits and septuagenarian Narayan Rath , a resident of Barhampur under  Dhamnagar police limits of Bhadrak district.

During the interrogation, the arrested persons confessed to the police that they were involved in a series of theft, dacoit y and temple burglary cases under Kendrapara Town police, Kendrapara Sadar police and Pattamundai police limits in the last few months . The arrested anti-socials also informed the police that they used to sell the gold ornaments and other stolen items to people of Kendrapara town and Pattamundai area. Based on the information extracted from them, Kendrapara police formed six teams led by SDPOs of Kendrapara and Pattamundai and conducted raids at Kendrapara and Pattamundai and managed to arrest as many as 10 persons, including five jewellery shop owners,  for their involvement in receiving the  stolen properties. Police also seized several stolen items from their possessions, Gochhayat said.

The arrested dacoits also informed to the police that on March 28th night, they had looted one and half feet long Asthadhatu idol of Gopinath-Bije pratima of Lord Dadhibabanjew  at Tamala Sasan, along with six  bronze idols worshipped at the sanctum sanctorum of Dadhibabanjew temple at Choudakulat under Pattamundai police limits, after breaking the grills and lock  of the  temple. They revealed that they sold the asthadhatu idol to one Debashis Sahu of Badahat villag , who too was arrested with them for receiving the stolen properties, the SP informed.

All the arrested persons were booked in Pattamundai PS case no -91/17 under Section 451,380 of IPC, 142/17 under Section 457,380 of IPC, 160/17 under Section 399.402 of IPC, Kendrapara Town PS case no -08/17 under Section 457,380 of IPC, 30/17 379,411 of IPC, 03/17 457,380 of IPC .All the 14 arrested were later produced before the SDJM court of Kendrapara today where they were remanded to jail custody.

Meanwhile, the haunt is on in Dhamanagar area to nab other accused and to seize several other stolen properties. “We would pray before the Magistrate to take the four dacoits on remand very soon,” said Gochhayat.
