Bhubaneswar: Sweltering heatwave swept Odisha as 18 places recorded temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius or above, informed the Regional Meteorological Centre here today.

According to the data shared by the weather department, Sonepur was the hottest place in the State today as it witnessed a maximum temperature of 44.5 degree Celsius. This was followed by Balangir which sizzled at 43.5 degrees Celsius.

Other 16 places where the mercury rose to or above the 40 degrees Celsius mark today are Titlagarh (43.2), Sambalpur (43), Bargarh and Boudh (42.5), Jharsuguda (42.4), Bhawanipatna (42), Hirakud (41.9), Angul (41.7), Baripada(41.6), Paralakhemundi (41.5), Nuapada and Malkangiri (41), Dhenkanal (40.3) and Keonjhar, Sundargarh and Talcher (40 degrees Celsius).

Residents of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar witnessed temperatures of 39.4 and 38 degrees respectively today.
