Depression over Bay of Bengal intensifies; no threat to Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Regional Centre here has cleared it that the depression formed over southeast Bay of Bengal yesterday has no threat to Odisha despite its intensification further last night.

In its recent bulletin, the IMD has said that the depression has moved north-northwestwards with a speed of 13 kmph during past 06 hours and lay centred at 05:30 hrs IST of 14 th December, 2018.  It further said, the depression is currently lying about 700 km east-southeast of Trincomalee (Sri Lanka), 960 km east-southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu) and 1130 km southsoutheast of Machilipatnam (Andhra Pradesh).

The depression could further intensify further into a Cyclonic Storm during next 12 hours and take shape of a Severe Cyclonic Storm in subsequent 36 hours.

While the cyclone will have no measure impact on Odisha, rain and thundershowers are still likely at a few places in the state on 16th and 17th December.

While no port and fishermen warning have been issued in view of the cyclone the latter have been advised not to venture into southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal on 14th, into southwest and adjoining westcentral part of it on 15th along with westcentral and adjoining southwest area on 16th December.
