Cricket World Cup: New Zealand stun India in semi-final

Manchester: New Zealand beat India by 18 runs in the first semi-final of the 2019 World Cup at Old Trafford here on Wednesday.

Chasing the victory target of 240, India were bowled out at 221 in 49.3 overs in the rain-interrupted match.

The collapse of Indian side began with the early loss of three top-order batsmen- K L Rahul, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for five runs adding one run each.

Ravindra Jadeja’s sensational 59balls 77-run knock and MS Dhoni’s 50 raised hopes of a turnaround. But eventually, both were dismissed in quick succession as India lost the match in the last over.

Earlier, New Zealand posted 239 for 8 in the stipulated 50 overs. Resuming at 211 for five, the Black Caps could add only 28 runs to their overnight tally.

Ross Taylor top-scored 74 off 90 balls, while Skipper Kane Williamson made 67 off 95 balls. Opener Henry Nicholls made 28 from 51 deliveries.

For India, Paceman Bhuvneshwar Kumar claimed three wickets, while Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, Hardik Pandya and Chahal took one wicket each.

New Zealand’s Matt Henry was adjudged Player of the Match for his 3 for 37 runs.

In the final, New Zealand will face the winner of the second semi-final between defending champions Australia and hosts England.
