Mumbai: A 27-year-old doctor from Mumbai’s KEM hospital fell victim to a scam and lost Rs 1.40 lakh after placing an order for samosas from a popular eatery in Sion. The incident occurred on Saturday between 8.30 am to 10.30 am, according to a police official.

The doctor, along with his colleagues, had planned a picnic at Karjat and decided to order samosas for their journey. He found the eatery’s contact number online and placed the order. However, upon calling the number, the person who answered instructed him to make an advance payment of Rs 1,500.

Following the instructions, the doctor received a confirmation message on WhatsApp, which included the details of the order and a bank account number for online payment. The doctor transferred the initial amount of Rs 1,500. The individual on the other end then informed the doctor that he needed to create a transaction ID for the payment.

Unfortunately, while attempting to follow the instructions to create the transaction ID, the doctor ended up losing Rs 28,807 initially and eventually a cumulative amount of Rs 1.40 lakh, said the police official.

Upon reporting the incident, a case has been registered at Bhoiwada police station under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act.

This incident serves as a reminder for individuals to exercise caution while making online transactions and to be wary of potential scams. It is crucial to verify the authenticity of the sources involved in financial transactions and to stay vigilant against fraudulent activities.

The Mumbai police are currently investigating the matter to identify the culprits behind the scam and bring them to justice.
