Justice Vineet Saran, two others take oath as Supreme Court judges

New Delhi: Justice Vineet Saran, former Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court, took oath as a judge of the Supreme Court on Tuesday.

Along with Justice Saran, two other judges – Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice KM Joseph – also took oath as the apex court judges.

Chief Justice of India Justice Deepak Misra administered the oath of office to Justices Saran, Banerjee and Joseph.

On Friday last week, the Centre came out with the notification on the appointment of the three judges to the apex court.

As per convention, the seniority of Supreme Court judges is determined on the basis of their swearing-in as judges of High Courts.

In case of the three judges being appointed to the Supreme Court, Justice Indira Banerjee became a High Court judge on 5 February 2002 and Justice Vinit Sarin was appointed to the High Court on 14 February 2002, while Justice KM Joseph was appointed High Court judge on 14 October 2004.

With Tuesday’s swearing-in, the total number of judges in the apex court has become 25.
