HIV cases climb to 47 as 36 more prisoners test positive in Lucknow jail
At least 36 prisoner lodged in the Lucknow District Jail have been tested positive for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection.
Lucknow: At least 36 prisoner lodged in the Lucknow District Jail have been tested positive for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection. The total number cases have now increased to 47.
According to reports, all the HIV-infected patients are receiving treatment in a hospital in the capital city of Uttar Pradesh.
The diagnosis came as part of health tests done by the health department of the state in December 2023.
Following the rise in positive cases, the jail administration has begun counselling for the infected prisoners, as part treatment. The authorities have also dietary changes for the infected people.
All the HIV positive prisoners have been kept under the observation of doctors. As per official reports, they are receiving treatment at KGMU’s Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) Centre.
Ashish Tiwari, Jail Superintendent Lucknow told media agency ANI that the health screening of prisoners was carried out on the orders of the state AIDS Control Society.
Earlier, 11 prisoners had tested positive for HIV. Further detailed reports are awaited.
